In June 2023, while listening to a podcast about AI’s impact on Hollywood, they were shocked to hear Lehrman’s voice speaking about the very topic. After extensive online searching, they found that the company Lovo had created and sold AI-generated versions of their voices, leading them to file a lawsuit against the firm.
The couple alleges that Lovo obtained their voices through a deceptive process. In 2019, they were contacted by anonymous users on Fiverr to record generic radio scripts for “research purposes.” The recordings were later used to create voice clones without their knowledge or proper compensation. Lovo has denied any wrongdoing, stating that their interactions were legal.
The lawsuit, filed in May, centers on “rights of publicity” and potential breaches of contract. This case is part of a broader trend where creatives are fighting against AI’s encroachment on their work. As AI threatens to disrupt more industries, Lehrman and Sage find themselves at the forefront of a battle to protect their livelihoods in an increasingly AI-driven world.
